HORACE GREELEY IS TOPS!

Howard Wins Middle School Division

Horace Greeley High from Chappaqua, NY, fielded five teams in the 2022 National Science Challenge … All of them made the playoffs!  The A-team edged Parkway South (MO) 195-190 and defeated defending champs South Carolina Governor’s School for Math & Science 175-125 to advance to the finals.  Meanwhile, Horace Greeley’s B-team overcame Horace Greeley E 185-155, then beat the C-team 210-185 to make the finals.  The A-team won the final match 160-135.

In the middle school division, Drexler (IA) won out over Miller Magnet (GA) in the semifinals, 90-50.  Howard (GA) won the title match handily, 225-40.

National Science Challenge

FALL TOURNAMENT: NOV. 12, 2022

The venue will be Google Meet which is free and easy-to-use. Start time will likely be 9:00 or 10:00 Eastern, but any Mountain & Pacific Time Zone teams may start later. Entry Fee: $75 per team

Each team will compete in at least three official tournament matches. Advancement to the Single Elimination playoffs will be determined by performance in the three preliminary games. All 2-1, and 3-0 teams will make the playoffs.

Your team contingent should include three or four starters and one or more coaches. Alternate(s) are allowed but must remain on mute until they are in play.

Levels

There will be two levels: High School and Middle School.

Training

A tutorial on using the videoconferencing program relative to the tournament will be sent to all coaches in time for them to practice with their teams. Our tech coordinator will be available to answer all questions ahead of time and will be available by phone for all matches.

Cap

For this one-day tournament we will be limiting the field to no more than 36 teams.

NATIONAL SCIENCE CHALLENGE*

ILLINOIS AND NEW YORK TRIUMPH

Participating for the first time in any Questions Unlimited tournament, Heritage High from Homer, IL entered the playoffs 3-0 and seeded No. 1.  Appling from Macon, GA was the lowest-ranked playoff team, but pulled two upsets in the playoffs.  Their magic ran out in the finals, as Heritage won it handily, 180-60. 
 
In a rematch of a preliminary contest, Pingry (NJ) defeated Horace Greeley A (NY) 275-170.  That prevented an all-Horace Greeley finals.  Horace Greeley B overcame Pingry in the title game, 225-180.
